Wheelbase Spring Classic 19th March

‘Challenging’ was an understatement for our WHEELASE Spring Classic sportive, which ran on Sunday 19 March 2017.
Heavy rain lashed the course and riders were battered by 50mph gusts. 100 hardy souls left the shop at 9am to tackle a choice of either 44miles or 70miles.
The first challenge on the course was Shap summit with a favourable tailwind! Fastest on this timed hill climb were:
Jenny Holden Kendal CC 17:48
Kevin Pritchard, Tri-Lakeland 14:17
Then on to a windswept Orton, then Tebay and home for the short coursers but it was on to Howgill and Sedbergh for long course riders. A burst river in Dentdale meant a quick bit of course re-routing, then another big climb on to Barbondale with a block headwind. The final obstacle for the Long Course riders was the little known 25% ascent of Shacklerbank before turning home via Grayrigg.
All-in-all a very tough, damp day in the saddle, no accidents, everyone home safely and plenty of relieved faces when the sun eventually came out in the Staveley Mill Yard.
Well done and huge respect for all the riders who braved the elements! Hope you’ll be back for more next year! #WheelbaseSpringClasssic
